The Chinese People Respond to Tibet

My Chinese isn’t that great, but here are a few comments I found in response to the Tibetan riots on Sina. The ones that I rummaged through all tend to say the same things about using all sorts of force and violence to ruthlessly crush the separatists elements to preserve social stability and prevent the fracturing of China. So here they are:

对分裂分子只有一个办法,那就是赶尽杀绝!!!

There is only one way to combat separatists: ruthlessness!!!

严惩打,砸,抢份子,维护西藏社会稳定,维护祖国统一

Severely smash and defeat the bad elements in Tibet to safeguard social stability and unification of the motherland

Crack down and severely punish the separatists! Protect the unity of the motherland! Crack down and severely punish the premeditated and evil intention to separate from the motherland! They want to hurt the people and our society! I propose that we intensify our actions and increase our punishment against against the separatist elements!

So, now that I got you all riled up and shouting about how evil and heartless these Chinese commies are while wrapping yourself in a Tibetan flag and joining protesters in your little suburban community to show solidarity with the Dalai Lama and the oppressed Tibetans, let’s think a bit.

Whenever dramatic events like this take place, the common people always get really angry and say all these irrational things. For example, after 9/11, there were a ton of people talking about killing those damned Muslim rag-head A-rabs and turning their desert into a plate of glass. The world suddenly becomes black and white with ‘we’, of course, being the good guys and anyone who opposes ‘us’, of course, being the ’evil separatist elements’ (or terrorists).

The reason why I post those ridiculous comments and then go on to say that they’re only natural is because I think we tend to attribute the idiocy of their comments to the fact that they’re Chinese. The heartlessness, the narrow-mindedness, and the vengefulness of their comments becomes associated with being key characteristics of the Chinese people when in fact they’re just characteristics of angry mobs…

…and idiots.
